What is an NSN?
A National Stock Number is the 13-digit number the US government and NATO use to identify a supply item, such as 5310-01-628-0025. Every item DLA buys on DIBBS has one.
How do you read an NSN?
The first four digits are the federal supply class (FSC), which says what kind of item it is. The next two are the country that assigned the number: 00 and 01 mean the United States. The last seven are the item's serial number. The last nine digits together are called the NIIN.
What is a NIIN?
The National Item Identification Number is the last nine digits of the NSN: the country code plus the serial number. It identifies the item on its own, without the supply class.
Where can I bid on an NSN?
DLA posts requests for quotes on DIBBS, its bid board. FedQuote lists every request in plain English, so you can see what is open for an NSN, the quantity and the deadline.
